Members
Junior Fellows are full-time students at the University of Toronto, either registered with the School of Graduate Studies or pursuing professional degrees such as law, medicine or dentistry. They must apply to the College for election by Corporation. The application deadline is May 1st and election is for one year.
Sixty Junior Fellows are resident and another sixty to seventy are non-resident. Non-resident Junior Fellows enjoy all the benefits of being a part of the Massey community and are included in the many events held at the College. They are welcome to have meals in the College, to use the study carrels and to have access to both of the College libraries.
Three or more fellowships for Canadian journalists are awarded annually, tenable for one academic year, September to May, at the University of Toronto. Fellows are selected by a committee appointed by the President of the University and the Master of Massey College. They are chosen for professional competence and future potential as effective and responsible journalists.
Applicants must have at least five years’ experience and be full-time news or editorial employees with Canadian newspapers, news services, radio, television, or magazines. Freelance journalists who have been working consistently in the media over a five-year period will also be considered.
Fellows are free to enrol in any graduate or undergraduate courses and use the full facilities of the University. There are no educational prerequisites for a Fellowship; Fellows do not receive credits or degrees for work done during the year.
Senior Fellows are elected from prominent representatives of both academic and professional interests at the University of Toronto. Senior Fellows are invited to participate in all College activities, as well as Senior Fellow Luncheons and Senior Fellows Dine in Hall evenings held several times each year, and an annual Senior Fellows Gala evening. Nominations for Senior Fellowship may be submitted to the Registrar at Massey College by the end of January each year. A Nominating Committee reviews all applications and its recommendations are voted upon by members of Corporation. A Senior Fellow Nominating Form is available by contacting the Registrar at 416-978-2891 or by email at mgraham@masseycollege.ca.
Senior Residents are visiting scholars or distinguished professionals from across Canada and around the world who may wish to live at the College for an academic year. They participate actively in College life, and can represent any occupation or academic discipline. Applicants are asked to submit a cv and a letter outlining their anticipated work while at the College. Applications should be submitted to the Registrar of the College at 4 Devonshire Place, Toronto, M5S 2E1 or by email to mgraham@masseycollege.ca. All applications are reviewed by the Master in the spring of each year.
Alumni
The Alumni of the college number over fifteen hundred. They pursue a wide range of careers in the academic world, the arts, business, and the professions, in Canada and many other countries. Alumni remain Members of the College community, and Junior Fellows automatically become part of the Alumni membership. The Alumni are an active body, with representatives on most major committees of Corporation. They are encouraged to participate in Alumni events (including at least one formal dinner in Hall each year) and other events at the College, such as the Christmas Gaudy. The Alumni Executive welcomes ideas and input for such events. General enquiries concerning the Alumni may be directed to the Alumni Secretary, Pat Kennedy, at pkennedy@masseycollege.ca.
Governed by an elected Board of Directors, the Alumni work with the Master and Fellows to help meet the needs of the College. Many members enjoy using the College facilities for research, relaxation, and entertaining friends. The Alumni play a valuable role in the life of Massey College.
The Quadrangle Society is made up of members of the non-academic community and is intended to be a bridge between that community and the College. Members attend Book Club meetings at the College several times throughout the year, an annual Gala evening and an annual Tea, and participate in a mentorship program with the Junior Fellows. Nominations may be made directly to the Master’s office.
Journalism Fellows are outstanding Canadian and international journalists in mid-career who are selected to spend a year at the College.
The Writer-in-Residence is a renowned Canadian writer chosen by the College and the University’s Department of English, to spend an academic term at the College and the University.
