Civility and Leadership for the Public Good

As we embark on a period of realignment—both geo-politically and here at the College—I am heartened by the Massey College mission: to inspire Civility and Leadership for the Public Good on issues of contemporary concern. To this end, we stand firmly as a civil and welcoming home for open dialogue for all. For example, in the coming days I look forward to exploring actionable solutions to create a more inclusive health care system on January 29 with renowned disability activist David Lepofsky, and reflecting on issues of identity with the Massey Book Club through Elamin Abdelmahmoud’s powerful Son of Elsewhere.

I would like to take a moment and introduce my trusted right-hand, Jessica Dee Humphreys. Though continuing part time for the near future, she will be the critical point of contact between myself and the College community. Jess and I have worked together for many years. I trust her implicitly but I also like her, and I know you will too! Jessica can be reached at jhumphreys@masseycollege.ca or 416-978-6329.

I would also like to share that we are conducting a formal search to fill the critical combined role of Chief Administrative Officer and Bursar. A job posting will soon appear on the Massey College website, and I invite you to share it with those whom you feel meet the relevant criteria.

We are looking forward to tonight’s High Table where we will celebrate the Clarkson Laureates and their extraordinary contributions to the public good!

Dr. James Orbinski
Principal

NEW LIBRARY EXHIBITION

When you next visit Massey, be sure to venture to the Robertson Davies (Lower) Library to view the new exhibit.

Current Exhibition: Unbound: Queerness and the Book Arts, 1850–1987

January – April 2025

Curated by Robert Steele, doctoral candidate in English at the University of Toronto and Junior Fellow at Massey College.

This exhibition explores the intersections between queerness and the book arts. Ranging temporally from the emergence of medically defined homosexuality in the mid-nineteenth century through to the onset of the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, the books in this exhibition trace the evolution of queer identities and queer expression on the printed page. The exhibition seeks to highlight not only how queer authors and illustrators understood their identities within their historical contexts but also how artistic movements, such as the Aesthetic and Decadent movements of the late-nineteenth century, facilitated queer collaborations, queer communities, and modes of queer expression. The exhibition is part of a SSHRC-funded insight grant, “Lighting the Windows of the Past: Queer and Feminist Approaches to Special Collections,” led by Claire Battershill, David Fernandez, and Kit MacNeil.
