Holding Firm Vs Blending In: Learning From The Chanukah Story
As a preview to the Jewish holiday of Chanukah, we will learn about the rituals and customs of the holiday as well as discuss what it can teach us today. The holiday commemorates when the Syrian Greek empire took over the Land of Israel, forbidding the Jews from being Jewish and desecrating their Temple in Jerusalem. A group of Jews fought back and won back the Temple and the ability to be Jewish again. Later, the Jewish tradition focused on the miracle of rededicating the Temple’s eternal lamp with only enough oil for one day, but it lasted for eight days. What does it mean to fight for who you are? What does it mean to want to blend in? What are the miracles of this process?
