The Massey Gala: An Evening with Shawn Micallef

March 1 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST

Free

The keynote speaker at this year’s Gala is Shawn Micallef, the author of Frontier City: Toronto on the Verge of Greatness, and Stroll: Psychogeographic Walking Tours of Toronto, as well as The Trouble With Brunch: Work, Class and the Pursuit of Leisure.

Drawing from his acclaimed books (with perhaps glimpses of his next book currently in the works), Shawn will address, “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Canadian Cities.”

“Canadian cities are more exciting than you think,” he says. “Long overlooked, municipal governments touch the everyday lives of Canadians in multiple ways. It’s time we pay more attention to them and appreciate our urban nation.”

Shawn is a weekly columnist at the Toronto Star, and a senior editor and co-owner of the independent, Jane Jacobs Prize-winning magazine Spacing.  In 2002, while a resident at the Canadian Film Centre’s Media Lab, he co-founded [murmur], the location-based mobile phone documentary project that has spread to over 25 cities globally. He teaches at the University of Toronto and was a 2011-2012 William Southam Journalism Fellow.

Massey’s annual Gala, a formal dinner, commences with cocktails in the Junior Common Room, followed by dinner in Ondaatje hall. The feature of the night is the keynote address. Port, cheese, coffee and desserts are served afterwards in the Upper Library.
