Care and consent: Journalists and their sources
What responsibility do journalists owe story subjects and sources unfamiliar with media and the sometimes harmful impacts stories can have on people? Is it a journalist’s role to provide counsel? Should it be mandatory? When should journalists protect identities or over-ride the wishes of a story subject? How far should a journalist go to help a source shield themselves from potential harm? When there is intense blowback after a story has been published, what then?
Please join the Massey Southam Journalism Fellows for a discussion moderated by Kathy English, Toronto Star’s Public Editor. Confirmed as a panelist is Michelle Shephard, award-winning Toronto Star journalist and documentary maker. More panelists to come.
