The symposium will explore the Treaty of Niagara and other treaties that define Indigenous-Settler relationships at Massey College and across Turtle Island (North America). The event will be held from 10:00am to 2:30pm in the Upper Library. Please apply online at http://tiny.cc/TREATIESTALK.
This Junior Fellow-organized symposium will include talks from experts on law and Indigenous history about historic and ongoing responsibilities of Settlers on Treaty lands. By combining presentations from expert legal scholars and historians with group discussions and contemplation, we hope to reflect on our individual and communal relationships to and responsibilities towards the land we occupy and its original Peoples.
The panel will include discussion of images and items displayed in the Chapel Royal and their relationship to Massey College’s treaty responsibilities. These include the mural depicting the signing of the Treaty of Niagara, a replica of the Silver Covenant Chain of Friendship Wampum Belt, and tobacco bundles.
