NATHALIE DES ROSIERS ELECTED PRINCIPAL OF MASSEY COLLEGE
To take effect on August 1, 2019

Nathalie Des Rosiers is to become the next Principal of Massey College, succeeding Hugh Segal, who retires on June 30th, 2019 from the position he has held since July 1st, 2014.

At its meeting on May 14th, 2019, the Governing Board of Massey College approved the election of Nathalie Des Rosiers. This followed an extensive process begun in the fall of 2018 by a Search Committee representing all constituencies of the college.

In accepting the position of the Principal, Ms. Des Rosiers said: “”I am humbled and honoured to follow in the footsteps of the great Heads of College, who have led it over the years.  Massey College is a jewel of the Canadian academic and intellectual scene and I am very excited to be part of its ongoing fabulous journey.”  Ms. Des Rosiers, who currently serves as the Member of Provincial parliament for Ottawa-Vanier, will be stepping down from that position, in due course.

In a letter to the members of the Massey community, the Chair of the Governing Board and of the Search Committee, Alan Broadbent, wrote: “Massey College is delighted to welcome Nathalie Des Rosiers as its new Principal. She is a distinguished scholar and respected leader who, throughout an impressive career, has shown a deep respect and understanding of the academic community and a profound interest in the development of graduate students and young scholars. She will bring to Massey a fine mixture of intellectual seriousness, curiosity about the world, and a sense of fun and community.”

The current Principal, Hugh Segal, commented:  “Nathalie Des Rosiers is an accomplished academic leader, experienced former Dean of Law, renowned scholar, and articulate advocate for fairness, civil liberties, inclusion and academic excellence in both official languages. Her time as Principal will be of immense and compelling benefit both to Massey College, the University of Toronto and the broader community they both serve.”

The election was duly confirmed by the Governing Council, pursuant to the Massey College Act, at its meeting on May 16th, 2019. On behalf of the University of Toronto, President Gertler congratulated the new Principal, stating: “Massey College is a vital Canadian institution and a prominent part of the wider University of Toronto community. Nathalie Des Rosiers is well suited to lead the College forward, as an accomplished scholar with an impressive record of leadership in the academy, in her profession and in public service. On behalf of the University, I would like to congratulate her on her election as Principal.”
