Massey College Newsletter, November 2019

From The Principal

Dear Massey Community,  Chers collègues,

October 2019 has been full exciting events. Our hard-working staff was able to do it all so well! I want to thank them on your behalf.

The celebration of our partnership with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation occurred on October 25th, the same day as the High Table celebrating Indigenous Heritage. A very moving ceremony took place in the morning with the Lieutenant Governor sharing a poem written by Stacey Laforme, Chief of the Mississaugas, while retired Court of Appeal Justice Harry LaForme explained the significance and the importance of the land acknowledgement. Finally, Chief Laforme recited one of his poems about identity, a poem that speaks so well to all of us, and particularly to Junior Fellows. He spoke of not being framed by others, and of knowing who one truly is by looking inside. It was a great event.

Senior Fellow Barbara Sherwood Lollar was honoured for receiving the 2019 Herzberg Gold Medal for Science and Engineering. We launched books by Brian Cantwell Smith (The Promise of AI) and M.G. Vassanji (A Delhi Obsession). Retired Chief Justice and Visitor Beverley McLachlin discussed her memoirs, Truth Be Told, with Junior Fellows and Journalism Fellows, and we celebrated our partnership with the Royal Society of Canada.

The Friesen Prize winner Bartha Knoppers visited the Massey Community. We appreciated great history writing with the Cundill Prize, listened to Senior Fellow Haroon Siddiqui’s assessment of the future of the press in Canada, and reflected on The Leadership Arts of Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Sally Armstrong’s CBC Massey Lectures tour concluded in Toronto. We held the traditional Founders Gaudy High Table with Gaelic dancing afterwards.  And then there were the Junior Fellows Lectures, the Gown Run (see picture above), Massey Talks, Ask a Journalism Fellow Anything, a Diwali Celebration, an Alumni Dinner, a book club discussion of Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black, a music club, a Science at Massey event with Senior Fellow John Polanyi, two services in the Chapel and the inaugural event of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography with Katie Daubs. In early October we also had my installation ceremony and a panel discussion on “Ethics, Community and Leadership”.

I reflect on this last month with a sense of exhilaration about what our community can do and how we come together on so many good occasions. It is important that the larger community gets to know more about what is going on at Massey, how it works to sustain itself and contribute to the advancement of ideas.

In November, we begin the mentorship program, as well as the very important annual appeal to your generosity so that we can continue to “nourish learning and serve the public good”. I welcome your suggestions and ideas.
