(TORONTO: June 20th 2017) – Massey College, in the University of Toronto, announced today that Her Majesty the Queen has graciously agreed to the designation as the third Chapel Royal in Canada, the college’s St Catherine’s Chapel. It is now distinguished by being the first interdenominational and interfaith Chapel Royal in the country.
The announcement is being made jointly on National Aboriginal Day by the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation and Massey College in light of the Canadian sesquicentennial of Confederation and to acknowledge the enduring and unique relationship between the Crown and the First Nations.
The request for the designation, made by Massey College and supported by the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, was forwarded to Buckingham Palace last year through the office of the Governor General of Canada. It was inspired, in part, by the “calls to action” from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Approved by Buckingham Palace through the Office of the Governor General of Canada
