Dear Massey Community,
The Massey College Music Club is beginning to make plans for next year, and we are asking for your help. We invite you to fill out a very short poll (2-5 minutes), and give us your opinion on what kinds of programming you’d like to see and hear.
The Music Club meets twice each term, to explore the creation and performance of music across different cultures and in different times. Our events are intended to be both entertaining and enlightening, and we are open to a wide variety of possible topics. We appreciate all suggestions and ideas.
The Music Club Committee will be working over the summer to review the poll responses, finalize plans, and book guest speakers and performers. The committee consists of Junior Fellow Sam Little, Alumni Elizabeth Rouget and Hannah Chan-Hartley, Quadrangler Barbara Charles, Senior Fellow Helmut Reichenbacher, and myself as chair.
As a reminder, the past year’s programming included:
– The Making of an Opera, with Johannes Debus, Music director of the Canadian Opera Company, talking about the premiere of Hadrian, by Rufus Wainwright and Daniel McIvor
– The Future of Music in a Global Culture, with Dinuk Wijeratne, Sri Lankan-born Canadian composer, conductor boundary-crossing collaborator
– The Monkey Orchestra: Social Satire in Baroque Music and Art, with musicologist Mary Ann Parker and theatre historian Domenico Pietropaolo
– Music, Identity and Memory, with ethnomusicologist Joshua Pilzer talking about music in the lives of Korean survivors of the Japanese “comfort women” system of World War II
We look forward to hearing from you, and to sharing another exciting season with you next year.
