Update from the Principal and Events the Week of June 1st

Dear Members of the Community, Chers collègues,

Like many around the world, I believe that we must take stock of racism, in the multiple ways that it expresses itself. Members of the Black community, within Massey and around it, are suffering. I see the impact that events of the last week have had on our Junior Fellows here. Our resolve to do our part to end anti-black racism must continue. A special Massey Dialogue on this issue is being planned.

We had good conversations on the Massey Dialogues last week:

This week we have two more exciting Massey Dialogues:

Tuesday, June 2 at 4pm – Junior Fellow Upasana Saha will host Dr. Joanne Liu, Senior Fellow Dr. James Orbinski, and Senior Fellow Dr. Peter Singer to discuss Global Health. Click here to watch the discussion.

Thursday, June 4 at 5pm – Senior Fellow John Ralston Saul will speak on Freedom of Expression along with Senior Fellow Haroon Siddiqui and Junior Fellow Jona Zyfi as commentators. Click here to watch the discussion.

I would also like to solicit your participation in a review of our Journalism Fellowship program, which is essential to the Massey Community and has enriched all of us, and Canadian society for decades.

We are committed to maintaining the program and want to have your input on how it can continue to serve the public good as the world of media changes. The Terms of Reference for the Review Committee are linked here. Please send your suggestions for nominations, and submissions to Emily at emockler@masseycollege.ca (Nominations must be received by June 10).

Junior Fellow Niklas Bobrovitz contributed to a major COVID-19 project that was launched last week. The project is called SeroTracker, which tracks and synthesizes findings from SARS-CoV-2 antibody studies worldwide.

Data from studies all over the world is displayed at SeroTracker.com. The project has the potential to inform the development of SARS-CoV-2 serosurveillance programs worldwide and will be of interest to clinicians, public health officials, and policymakers.

Nik’s contribution has been to lead the collection and synthesis of the global data on SARS-CoV-2 antibody studies. Click here to read the article describing this part of the work.

I hope that you are all keeping well,
